Inspired by the opaque glass windows of historic St. Paul Catholic Church in Smithville, Texas, Marti M. Burns has spent over 15 years sketching and painting the Inspired Images series. A professional artist with a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, Marti has been an art teacher, a corporate art director, and an owner and manager of an art gallery on Sixth Street in Austin. Though she had never created religious art before, and since receiving her inspiration, she has worked exclusively on the Inspired Images series. Many of the paintings are featured in the book Looking With Your Soul.
Marti has been a St. Paul parishioner for over 20 years, is a member of the St. Paul Altar Society, and has served on the St. Paul Pastoral Council and Parish Arts Committee. Marti’s home and studio are located on twenty acres in Bastrop, Texas, where she lives with her husband John.

When the St. Paul Master Plan Committee first considered traditional stained glass for the 17 windows designed for its new Adoration Chapel, it was deemed entirely too cost prohibitive. Parishioner Marti Burns was approached for ideas and she suggested a new, low-cost technology where high-resolution images could be digitally reproduced using ceramic inks permanently infused into window glass. She generously offered free use of the digital scans of her Inspired Images series of paintings for the Chapel Windows. The paintings were inspired by the original windows in St. Paul Catholic Church and are featured in the book Looking With Your Soul. Window samples and costs using Marti's digital scans produced with the new glass technology were reviewed by the Master Plan and Parish Arts Committees, and approved by the Pastoral Council. A Gala was held where over 100 excited parishioners provided funding for every window. In the end, however, Bishop Vásquez felt the paintings/windows were too contemporary for our rural Smithville parish so generic, low cost religious-themed windows ended up being installed in the Chapel. Marti is now pursuing other opportunities to realize the Chapel Windows project. If you want to get involved, contact Marti at martiburns@gmail.com or via mobile/text at 512-589-3790.
